Japan is once again open to leisure travellers, but you may require a covid vaccine before your departure

Are you wondering if you need a covid shot or a covid-19 RT PCR test before you vacation in Japan? Here is some advice to help you work out what health preparations you need to make before your visit to Japan.

When visiting Japan, keep up to date with current events

Japan, like most other countries, now has rather sophisticated legislation in place to protect its population against covid. As the government responds to covid levels in its society, these regulations are likely to change abruptly and without notice. So, at all stages of arranging your trip to Japan, make judgments based on the most recent travel advice.

The Canadian Embassy and Consulates in Japan are the best places to acquire the most up-to-date information about covid-19 test entry requirements for US travellers visiting Japan. You can also verify the covid regulations for your trip to Japan with your airline and travel agent.

Do I need to get vaccinated against covid before visiting Japan?

The Government of Canada advises people who are not fully vaccinated to avoid non-essential travel.

If you are fully vaccinated against covid-19, you’ll need to show a certificate of vaccination. Fully vaccinated tourists going to Japan do not need to get a pre-travel covid test. If you have not had three doses of a vaccine on the World Health Organization’s emergency use list, Japan does not consider you to be fully vaccinated.

People who live in Alberta can get free covid vaccinations at our travel clinics in Calgary, and Edmonton. Remember to bring your health card to your appointment.

Do I need a covid test before I travel to Japan?

If you are not fully vaccinated, you can still go to Japan, but you must present documentation of a negative covid-19 test conducted fewer than 72 hours before your departure.

Without this negative covid test result certificate, you won’t be allowed to board your flight to Japan. The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has some information about covid-19 negative test result certificates. The certificates that we issue with your covid test comply with Japan’s regulations – just let us know at your appointment that you need a certificate for travel to Japan.
