A travel health appointment is an opportunity to assess the risks you might be exposed to while travelling.
During your appointment you can ask any questions about issues like food safety and infectious diseases. Your travel health adviser will tell you about any steps you must take to support your vaccinations.
Travel vaccines
The range of travel vaccinations we can administer includes:
- Cholera
- Diphtheria
- Hep A
- Hep B
- Japanese encephalitis
- Meningococcal meningitis
- Polio
- Rabies
- Retanus
- Rick-borne encephalitis
- Typhoid
- Yellow fever
- Malaria prophylaxis
Vaccination certificates
When you arrive at some countries you will not be allowed to stay unless you can prove you are immune to certain diseases, either through vaccination or because you’ve had the disease. Yellow fever is one example of such a disease. Meningococcal meningitis is another. Pilgrims travelling for Haj to Saudi Arabia will need a certificate to prove they have been vaccinated against meningitis.
Your travel health adviser will look at your travel plans and tell you if you will need a certificate of vaccination or immunity. Our Edmonton Downtown clinic has been designated a yellow fever centre by the government of Canada, so we can administer the yellow fever vaccine and provide you with a certificate.
Entry requirements change all the time, so don’t leave it to chance. Come and see us and get the latest, most accurate information about the entry requirements for the countries you are visiting. We have access to specialist resources not available to the public.
Look after your vaccination certificates. If you cannot produce them when required, you may be delayed at the border or sent back to where you came from.
Catch-up vaccinations in Edmonton
- If you’ve missed out on some vaccinations that you would normally get as part of the Canadian vaccination schedule, come and see us. These vaccinations will protect you from illnesses such as:
- Chicken pox
- Diphtheria
- Pertussis (whooping cough)
- Shingles
Do I need to bring anything to my travel health appointment?
Our travel health advisers ask that you bring to your appointment:
- travel vaccination certificates
- vaccination records
- itinerary, including destinations, dates and planned activities.
Do you need a longer appointment?
Some travellers may require longer appointments because they have complex needs. You can book two appointments back-to-back if any of these apply to you:
- You have a longer trip planned (more than three months)
- You are going to more than three destinations
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have an underlying condition.
Travellers with underlying conditions should also consult their normal healthcare provider. They can give insights about particular risks and provide specific recommendations to help mitigate the effects of heat, altitude, air travel etc.
We recommend seeing a travel health adviser six to eight weeks before you travel. But we know this isn’t always possible. Emergencies crop up, or you want to grab a last-minute deal, or you simply didn’t realize you needed to see a travel health adviser so far ahead of your trip. Even if you think you’ve run out of time, come and see us. There are still steps you can take to protect yourself from ill-health while travelling overseas.
Some vaccines are available on accelerated schedules. And we can help you to modify your itinerary to reduce your risk of exposure to dangerous illnesses.
Do I need a travel health appointment?
Travellers will be exposed to pathogens and health risks that are not present in Canada. Even simple activities like drinking from a tap or going swimming can expose you to microorganisms that will make you very sick.
Your immune system will be impacted by changes to your routine as well as changes to temperature and altitude. You might be more tired than normal because of jetlag. All of this puts you at increased risk of getting sick.
Even if you don’t think you need any vaccinations, you may need to modify your behaviour to protect your health when you travel overseas.
During your travel health appointment, the adviser will tell you everything you need to do to stay safe and healthy while you are overseas.
At this Edmonton travel health centre, Canadian Travel Clinics offers:
- consultations with advisers specializing in travel health
- travel vaccines
- malaria prophylaxis
- vaccination certificates
- catch-up vaccines for the normal Canadian vaccine schedule
