Ghana

Risk / Health Info for Ghana

What immunizations do I need for Ghana?

In addition to your regular shots (including tetanus), which should be up to date before you leave for Ghana, consider getting vaccinated against hepatitis A, typhoid and cholera. These unpleasant gastrointestinal diseases are easily picked up in areas with poor sanitation and are spread by contaminated food and water. Stick to commercially bottled water in Ghana and avoid using ice in drinks. Be sure to practise good hand hygiene.

Parts of Ghana lie on the African meningitis belt so meningococcal meningitis shots are recommended, especially for visits between December and June. Meningococcal meningitis is spread person-to-person like a flu or cold, so practise good cough and sneeze etiquette by washing your hands frequently and covering your mouth and nose with your arm when you cough or sneeze.

There have been outbreaks of pneumococcal meningitis in Ghana and those who are vulnerable to pneumococcal bacteria should ask about a pneumococcal vaccine. This group includes those with respiratory or heart disease; those who have had an invasive pneumococcal disease; and those with cochlear implants.

When you go to Ghana you are at risk of several mosquito-borne illnesses, including malaria and yellow fever. Protect yourself by using a reliable insect repellent and covering up as much as possible. Ensure you sleep under nets, too.

Should I get vaccinated against hepatitis B before going to Ghana?

Regular travellers and long-stay visitors should consider getting vaccinated against hepatitis B, which is spread by contact with contaminated blood or body products. Other groups at risk include children and healthcare workers. If you think you are at elevated risk of exposure to hep B, tell your Canadian Travel Clinics adviser.

Can I catch rabies in Ghana?

It is possible to get rabies in Ghana if an infected animal bites or licks you. Make sure your shot is up to date, especially if you will spend time in remote areas or work with animals. Always get immediate medical attention if you are bitten or scratched by an animal during your time in Ghana, even if you have been vaccinated so that a healthcare professional can decide whether to recommend post-exposure rabies prophylaxis.

What are the hospital facilities like in Ghana?

In Ghana there are few medical facilities outside the main towns. Expect to be evacuated if you need complex treatment. Your provincial or territorial health insurance will not cover you when you leave Canada, so get travel insurance before you go.

Malaria in Ghana
Malaria prophylaxis will be required for some parts of Ghana at certain times of year. There is no malaria vaccine, but there are anti-malaria drugs that should be taken before, during and after travelling to certain at-risk countries. Speak with your healthcare provider six weeks before your trip, as not all prophylaxis regimes are appropriate for all regions and all individuals.
Schistosomiasis in Ghana
The schistosomiasis parasite enters humans through the skin during contact with fresh water. To prevent infection, avoid swimming or paddling in lakes and streams in Ghana. This condition is also known as bilharzia.
