Before travelling to Austria, be sure to have up-to-date vaccines, especially for measles as there have been reported cases in the country. It is highly recommended that you purchase travel health insurance before you leave Canada because provincial or territorial health plans may not cover medical costs while you’re in Austria. Parts of Austria are higher than 2,400m, and travellers planning to spend time at a high altitude should take steps to protect themselves against the potentially life-threatening acute mountain sickness. Your healthcare provider can help with this.
Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in Austria
MERS-CoV is a viral respiratory infection with a high mortality rate. It is caused by the coronavirus and is thought to be contracted from infected camels. You should take diligent hygiene measures such as thorough handwashing if you visit a farm, barn or market or touch a camel. Avoid contact with sick animals. Do not drink raw camel milk or urine; and do not eat camel meat that has not been properly cooked. The Government of Canada has issued a travel health advisory about Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus in Austria.
Tick-borne encephalitis in Austria
Tick-borne encephalitis can be contracted in the forested areas of Austria. If you will be in an affected area from late spring to early fall, whether for fun (camping, hiking or walking) or work (with forestry or agriculture), speak to your healthcare provider about vaccination and other measures you can take to avoid TBE and other tick-borne illnesses before travelling to the area.
