Taiwan

Risk / Health Info for Taiwan

Make sure your shots are up to date, including cholera, when you plan to visit Taiwan. Talk to our advisers about getting vaccinated against hepatitis A and B, as well as Japanese encephalitis. Protect yourself against other mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue fever by using a reliable insect repellent and covering up as much as possible.

Taiwan has adequate healthcare facilities and some may even have English-speaking staff. Expect to pay before any treatment, so make sure you have sufficient funds and travel insurance before you go. Consult your provincial or territorial health authority for more information.

Altitude in Taiwan
Parts of Taiwan are higher than 2,400m, and travellers planning to spend time at a high altitude should take steps to protect themselves against the potentially life-threatening acute mountain sickness. Your healthcare provider can help with this.
Dengue fever in Taiwan
There have been cases of the mosquito-borne virus dengue fever in Taiwan. Dengue fever is also known as breakbone fever because of the severe bone, joint and muscular pains it causes, in addition to flu-like fever and headache. There is no vaccine for dengue fever. Avoid mosquito bites by using insect repellents (50% DEET) and by wearing protective clothing. Sleeping with mosquito nets is also recommended.

About Taiwan

Taiwan was called Formosa by Portuguese explorers in the 16th century, and it has been inhabited by Japanese as well as Chinese settlers. Densely populated, the island has lush forests and steep mountains in the centre, surrounded by crowded cities and white sandy beaches. Its high-tech industry is a key part of the global economy.

top Tips for travelling to Taiwan

Baseball is very popular in Taiwan, so try to catch a game when you’re there. Taipei and most cities have at least one night market, where you can find all kinds of food and treasure. Idyllic Sun Moon Lake is a favourite spot for honeymooners, but there is also a theme park with re-created indigenous villages on the east side of the lake. There is a debate between Taiwan and China over the country’s sovereignty, so if you bring it up in conversation, expect an argument or a quick change of subject.
