Russia

Risk / Health Info for Russia

In addition to your regular vaccinations, consider protecting yourself against the illnesses listed below before you go to Russia. In some areas of Russia, take precaution against insect bites. There have been reports of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, Lyme disease, tick-borne encephalitis and West Nile virus.

Medical care is available but may not be the same standard as in Canada. You may need to pay in advance. Make sure you have travel insurance before you go to Russia, so consult your provincial or territorial health authority for more information.

Altitude in Russia
Parts of Russia are higher than 2,400m, and travellers planning to spend time at a high altitude should take steps to protect themselves against the potentially life-threatening acute mountain sickness. Your healthcare provider can help with this.
Measles in Russia
The Government of Canada has issued a travel health notice about measles in Russia. If you are travelling there and have not been immunized against measles, speak to a healthcare provider.
Tick-borne encephalitis in Russia
Tick-borne encephalitis can be contracted in the forested areas of Russia. If you will be in an affected area from late spring to early fall, whether for fun (camping, hiking or walking) or work (with forestry or agriculture), speak to your healthcare provider about vaccination and other measures you can take to avoid TBE and other tick-borne illnesses before travelling to the area.

About Russia

Russia shares the Arctic with Canada, and is the only country that covers more territory than Canada. It has a very diverse and rich culture, not limited to its hockey players. Although it has been trying to diversify its economy, it still depended heavily on gas and oil as well as other extractive industries. Moscow’s Kremlin with its gold-domed cathedrals and the presidential palace are instantly familiar to most.

top Tips for travelling to Russia

Moscow is not the only city with a Kremlin — visit Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, which is among the most culturally diverse region of the Russian Federation. The Kremlin in Kazan has a mosque in addition to a Russian Orthodox cathedral. The white nights of Saint Petersburg in June are magical, as the sky barely gets dark. Plan to spend at least a day exploring the Hermitage. Global Affairs Canada advises travel to certain parts of Russia, so check before you go.
