Stick to commercially bottled water in Tajikistan, and follow the golden rule: if you can’t peel it, boil it or cook it, don’t eat it.

Medical facilities in Tajikistan are scarce and under-resourced. Make sure you have travel insurance that covers all medical expenses, including medical evacuation. Consult your provincial or territorial health authority for more information before you leave for Tajikistan.

Altitude in Tajikistan
Parts of Tajikistan are higher than 2,400m, and travellers planning to spend time at a high altitude should take steps to protect themselves against the potentially life-threatening acute mountain sickness. Your healthcare provider can help with this.
Malaria in Tajikistan
Malaria prophylaxis will be required for some parts of Tajikistan at certain times of year. There is no malaria vaccine, but there are anti-malaria drugs that should be taken before, during and after travelling to certain at-risk countries. Speak with your healthcare provider six weeks before your trip, as not all prophylaxis regimes are appropriate for all regions and all individuals.

About Tajikistan

Tajikistan is bordered by the Kyrgyz Republic, China, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. More than 90% of the landlocked country is mountains, and it has a large number of rivers and lakes. Tajikistan’s economy replies on exports of aluminum, cotton and fruit — and electricity.

top Tips for travelling to Tajikistan

Dushanbe is among the prettiest cities in central Asia, with interesting architecture and pleasant parks. The mountains and valleys offer a lot of good hiking, and local companies offer a variety of tours.

Tajik textiles and embroidery make excellent souvenirs, as do padded Tajik coats.

Global Affairs Canada advises against visiting some parts of Tajikistan so check before you leave.
